Kuykendall
Mr. Kuykendall was elected to the City Council in May 1998.
He served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2000-2001.
Mr. Kuykendall is a native of Galveston, Texas. He graduated from
Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, with a major in Music
Education. He received both his BME and his Masters from Texas
Southern University. He received his BME in 1961 and his Masters in
1969. Mr. Kuykendall received an Administrative Certification from
Stephen F. Austin State University in 1974.
His professional experience includes Administration in Crockett ISD
and the Lufkin ISD. He has taught in Kendleton ISD, Shepherd ISD,
Coldsprings ISD, and the Lufkin ISD. Mr. Kuykendall retired in 1997
while serving as Principal at Garrett Primary in Lufkin.
Mr. Kuykendall is active in community activities. He believes
attending church is the most important activity. Mr. Kuykendall is a
member of the NAACP and the Lufkin Host Lions Club. He served on the
City’s Planning and Zoning Commission from February 1992 until
February 1998. He is a member of the City’s Finance Committee,
City’s Undoing Racism Committee, Tree Board, DETCOG, and Concerned
Black Men of Lufkin, Texas. His professional memberships include
Texas Municipal League, Texas Association of Black City Council
Members, the Association of Mayors, Councilmembers and
Commissioners, and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates of
Angelina County).
Mr. Kuykendall was married to the late Viola Timms Kuykendall and
has two daughters, Valencia and Robbie.
Mr. Kuykendall is a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving from
1951-1954.
