Sarah Murray was elected to the City Council in
May 2011. She has been a Lufkin resident for over 50 years. Upon
graduation from Lufkin High School, she attended Stephen F. Austin
State University where she received a Bachelor of Science and a
Master’s Degree in Education. She was also a member of the
International English Honor Society.
Mrs. Murray is very active in the community and a member of numerous
organizations including the Junior League of Lufkin, CASA in the
Pines, and is the originator of the CASA Christmas Home Tour. She is
also a Life Member of the Kurth Memorial Library, Lufkin High School
Alumni and the Stephen F. Austin Alumni Association. Mrs. Murray
also previously served as Past President of the Sprig and Twig
Garden Club, the Dogwood Garden Club, the Lufkin Area Council of
Garden Clubs, Kurth Elementary PTA, Anderson Elementary PTA, and
Dunbar Intermediate School PTA. She also served as Past
Vice-President of East Texas Paws, a 501C3 Non-Profit Care for Life,
No Euthanasia Group and Past Ombudsman (DETCOG) for East Texas
Nursing Facilities/Retirement Homes, a testament to her passion for
both the care of the elderly and animal rights.
She is married to Joseph Edward (Joe) Murray, editor and publisher
emeritus of the Lufkin Daily news and winner of the 1977 Pulitzer
Prize. Mrs. Murray and her husband have three daughters; Mary Ida
(Missy) Murray Coward, Leigh Erin Murray Bonner and Katherine
Elizabeth Murray Langston. They are also proud grandparents of eight
grandchildren; Sarah Warner Coward, Adeline Louise Langston,
Isabelle Beatrice Bonner, Margaret Elizabeth Langston, Judson
Nathaniel (Nate) Coward III, William Joseph Langston, Edward Wesley
Bonner, and Thomas Roark Langston.
Mrs. Murray is of the Christian faith and an active member of First
Baptist Church where she has taught Sunday School for the last 44
years. Her interests include Historic Preservation for historical
neighborhoods and Downtown Lufkin, Classical Music, American
Playwrights and English and French antiques.
Mrs. Murray is a graduate of the Lufkin Fire
Department Citizen’s Fire Academy and serves as a HOSTS mentor at
Brandon Elementary. |
