WHAT IS GIS?

Geographical information systems (GIS) are a family of computer software tools that allow information to be linked to a geographical location. Information from maps is converted into digital form and can be used to benefit everyday life - from predicting houses in danger of flooding to analyzing crime patterns. GIS can even help a pizza restaurant plan its delivery routes!  Its usefulness goes far beyond that of traditional paper maps and GIS is fast becoming an established and powerful branch of information technology.

GIS.com is maintained and developed by ESRI and has the most extensive explanation and demonstration of GIS technology.  This is a great place to learn about GIS and it's uses.  The City of Lufkin is in no way associated with or responsible for any information contained on the GIS.com website.
