Motorists
traveling Lufkin’s East Loop 287 in the area of Tulane Drive can
expect some delays starting Thursday, October 9, 2008. In addition,
night operations are being planned for several areas of the project.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, now that the
Tulane Drive Bridge has been removed preparations will begin for
building the new structure. On Thursday and Friday, a striping crew
will be re-striping the eastbound and westbound lanes of The Loop.
This will require alternately closing the driving lanes and the
ramps. This work is being conducted as crews prepare to set up the
concrete traffic barriers for building the new bridge and the
retaining walls on The Loop. It is expected to take at least a week
to complete the preparations.

City
of Lufkin crews on Friday will begin removing hurricane-related
debris including trees, limbs and brush from area neighborhoods.
Solid Waste Services and Street Department employees will work 10
hours a day, six days a week for the next several weeks clearing the
debris.
Residents should place all debris next to the curb or in the
right-of-way. Do not place debris near or on top of fire hydrants,
water meters, utility poles, backflow devices or irrigation system
components. Also, do not place debris near or on top of natural gas
meters or regulators, telephone or cable connection boxes,
electrical connections or pipeline components. Please refrain from
placing debris directly underneath utility lines.
Piles of mixed debris will not be picked up during this phase of the
removal operation. Other material, including bagged garbage, bagged
yard waste, junk or building materials must be placed in a separate
pile for collection. Tree stumps that include root balls will be
picked up at a later date.
Any length of debris will be collected. The city will not be picking
up piles of leaves, however. Residents are responsible for bagging
any leaves or twigs left over from the removal of debris. The bagged
debris will be picked up later.
There is no need to place a work order to have this debris picked
up. Crews will begin working in all six City of Lufkin wards on
Friday October 3, and will continue until the debris has been
removed.

closed for continued cleanup. Most of the animals will be on exhibit
except for those which had exhibit damage where debris is still
being removed. Regular admission fees have been reinstated: $5.00
for adults 11 and older and $2.50 for children 4-11, children under
4 are free. “Hurricane Specials”, or free admission, will be offered
to evacuees who show proof of residence. All visitors and guests

various locations awaiting removal.
