KURTH MEMORIAL LIBRARY NEWS

Current Information

7/02/09

Our Summer Reading program will end on July 9, 2009.  The certificate parties will be held on July 8th at 11:00 am for ages 3 ½ - 6 and July 9th at 11:00 am for ages 6-12.  We hope that everyone who has participated in our program will be able to attend these final parties.

Our Summer Reading programs may be nearly over, but there are still lots of adventures awaiting your children at the library.  Bring them in and help them find all the wonders we have to offer:  Beginning readers can find such titles as Peek-a-bug illustrated by Jerry Smath, It's the bear! by Jez Alborough, The Four Seasons  by Sonia Black, Buster goes to Cowboy Camp by Denise Fleming, I Don't Want to Go to Camp by Eve Bunting, Petey Moroni's Camp Runamok Diary by Pat Cummings, The Best Picnic Ever by Clare Jarrett, Garfield's Picnic Adventure by Jack C. Harris, or A Little Bit of Trouble by Sally Grindley.  Older children might enjoy The Berenstain Bears and the Great Ant Attack by the Berenstains, The Green Dog: a Mostly True Story by Suzanne Fisher Staples, My One Hundred Adventures by Polly Horvath, Alien Attack by Jonny Zucker, Cut-throat Pirates by Jonny Zucker,  or Adventure In Gold Town by Deborah Hopkinson. Young adults looking for adventure this summer might want to pick up a copy of Chance Fortune and the Outlaws by Shane Berryhill, TheLast Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick, Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria McKernan, or Scorpia by Anthony Horowitz.

If you would like to do some internet research on your family, Ancestry Library Edition is available at no charge for patrons inside the library.  Heritage Quest is available for use in the library as well as outside the library for those with current library cards.  Stop in today and start digging up your roots.  If you need help accessing these databases, please ask in the Genealogy department.

New items this week include The Fugitive by Phillip Margolin, Die for You by Lisa Unger, Nightwalkers by P. T. Deutermann, Dropped Dead Stitch by Maggie Sefton, Murder on Waverly Place by Victoria Thompson, Sisters & Husbands by Connie Briscoe, The Ignorance of Blood by Robert Wilson, Sherlock Holmes and the King’s Evil by Donald Thomas, The Daddy Shift by Jeremy Adam Smith, and The Ascent of George Washington by John Ferling.

Our patrons can now get a complete listing of our new arrivals in all areas of the library on our website, or you can see a printed listing by stopping at the Reference Desk.

Kurth Memorial Library is open 10am to 7pm on Mondays, 9am to 6pm Tuesday through Thursday, 9am to 5:30 on Friday, and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.  We do not charge for membership, however, you must come in ahead of time to make application for a card in order to complete the address verification process.  Anyone who lives or works in Angelina County may apply for a library card.  Replacement cards are $1.  Parents or legal guardians must apply for library cards for children under 18.  Children under the age of 12 should not be left at the library without adult supervision.

Ancestry now available

Patrons interested in researching their family history can now access the library version of Ancestry.com at Kurth Memorial Library. We are excited to offer this service to our patrons, and encourage everyone to make use of this wonderful genealogy tool. Please stop by the Genealogy department for more information.

Story time for Children

Story Time for Children is held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 am. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring children aged 3 ½ to 6 on Wednesday and children aged 18 months to 3 years on Friday.

Gifts to the Library

Monetary gifts may be made to the Library as a gift in someone’s memory or in honor of a friend or loved one. Bookplates with the individual’s name are placed inside the books, and a card acknowledging the gift is sent to the family. This is an excellent way of remembering a special person.

Donations accepted

Kurth Memorial Library accepts donations of books, magazines, audio books and video materials year-round. These items may be added to our collection or sold in the yearly book sale, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Library every April. If donating large quantities, we request that you call the Circulation desk (936-630-0560) before bringing these items to the library.

Volunteers welcome

Volunteers are always welcome at Kurth Memorial Library. Persons over the age of 16 who are interested in spending as little as an hour or two per week helping to shelve books or straighten shelves are invited to contact the Circulation Supervisor, Thelma Adams, at 630-0560.
