Bali Mynah

Description:

White with black tips on wings and tail. Bare facial skin is blue. Lacy crest more pronounced in males and erected during displays. The sexes look alike.

Status:

Endemic to the island of Bali, this species never maintained a large population and is now endangered. The species is currently protected by international law. Zoos are working together to manage this species in a cooperative effort called a Species Survival Plan (SSP). The decline in numbers was due to human encroachment on its habitat and the pet trade.

 


Breeding:

Pairs nest in cavities and lay a clutch of 3 to 4 eggs which hatch in 14 days. Chicks fledge in 21-24 days.

Behavior:

Very social. Male sings and displays by bobbing up and down and vocalizing.

Vocalization:

This species makes several vocalizations of which some are long and complex.
