  • Collection Manager for Reptiles

    The Ellen Trout Zoo is looking for a motivated, experienced person who can provide leadership through knowledgeable management and care for the collection. This person will have opportunities to participate in large projects as well as smaller projects that include in house renovations and creation of new exhibits for current and new species.

    The successful candidate will work with an extensive collection of reptiles, including a high proportion and variety of venomous snakes. Paid zoo Herp experience, especially venomous snake experience, is required. Other animals under the care of this person will include non-venomous snakes, crocodilians, lizards, turtles/tortoises, invertebrates, amphibians, as well as some birds and mammals. The Ellen Trout Zoo is an active participant in Louisiana Pine Snake working groups and propagation efforts as well as many other programs. A wide range of propagation opportunities typically arise, ranging from fer-de-lance to sloths to tortoises to dart frogs, etc.

    As a working supervisor, the successful candidate is responsible for the daily husbandry of the animal collection and maintenance of enclosures and support facilities.

    The Collection Manager is responsible for motivating and mentoring staff and leading by example. Additional duties include maintaining accurate records, supporting the guest experience, scheduling, evaluating, and training personnel while ensuring safe work practices and high husbandry standards. The successful candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, work well within a team atmosphere, demonstrate good problem solving, written and oral communication, and organizational skills. This job entails a melding of manual labor and mental know-how / expertise, resulting in visible, professional accomplishments in which employees may take pride.

    The position requires: Bachelor of Science degree in Biology or related field; a minimum of three years paid experience in a professional zoological institution, good physical condition; ability to work both independently and as a team member with other employees and to present a positive professional image of the City of Lufkin and the Zoo to members of the public.

    This is a full-time position with excellent benefits and opportunities for professional growth and development. The position involves working on weekends and holidays.
