  • Collection Manager

    Two exciting opportunities have opened up at the Ellen Trout Zoo. We are looking for motivated, experienced persons who can provide leadership through knowledgeable management and care for the collection. These persons will have opportunities to participate in large projects such as expanding into great apes as well as smaller projects that include in house renovations and creation of new exhibits for current and new species.

    One position will focus primarily on mammals and the other on reptiles although there are opportunities for both to work with other taxa as well. The Ellen Trout Zoo maintains a diverse collection of mammals and reptiles including primates, rhinos, giraffes, crocodilians, venomous snakes, amphibians, hippos, hoofstock, and more.

    Collection Managers are responsible for motivating and mentoring staff, leading by example. Additional duties include maintaining accurate records, supporting the guest experience, scheduling, evaluating, and training personnel while ensuring safe work practices and high husbandry standards. The successful candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, work well within a team atmosphere, demonstrate good problem solving, written and oral communication, and organizational skills. This job entails a melding of manual labor and mental know-how / expertise, resulting in visible, professional accomplishments in which employees may take pride.

    The positions require: Bachelor of Science degree in Biology or related field; a minimum of three years experience in a professional zoological institution, good physical condition; ability to work both independently and as a team member with other employees and to present a positive professional image of the City of Lufkin and the Zoo to members of the public.

    These are both full-time positions with excellent benefits with opportunities for professional growth and development. The positions involve working on weekends and holidays.
