Utility Collections Scam Alert

February 20, 2015 - At least one Lufkin resident received a suspicious call regarding their water service bill. They contacted the City of Lufkin Utility Collections office after they received a telephone call from an unidentified person falsely claiming to represent the City and stating that the resident’s water service bill payment was late. The caller alleged that the past-due payment would result in service disconnection if payment was not rendered immediately, over the telephone, by credit card.

According to Utility Collections staff, the City does not make phone contact with residents regarding past due accounts or demand immediate, over-the-phone credit card payments. Legitimate communications concerning a past due account are always sent via US Postal Service and allow residents a grace period for making their payments.

JB Smith, Executive Director for Crime Stoppers stated; “anyone receiving a past due account call, for any service, account, or creditor, should never provide any personal or financial information until they verify the identity and authority of the person calling”.

Citizens Need to Watch Water Usage Through February

The City's Water Department would like to remind customers who have sewer services to make a conscious effort to conserve water usage for the months of December, January and February. Ordinance states that each residential customer will be charged sewer based on the average water usage from December, January and February.  With the new average taking effect on the March billing.  If you had a leak or problem during these months, your bill could be affected. Any questions or concerns should be directed to our office, 936 633-0220.

And as the seasons change and more customers begin to clear limbs, leaves and yard waste; please make sure and not place any object which could prevent the utility collections department from accessing your meters.  All meters are to be accessible by our department at all times.  We appreciate our customers giving us unlimited access to meters at all times.
