About Main Street Lufkin

In the late 1970s, Lufkin, like many of our small Texas downtowns, was in a serious state of decline. The automobile, suburban housing and the growth of local and regional shopping centers greatly reduced the traditional role of downtowns as the principal center of economic activity.

In the early 1980’s Lufkin community leaders felt it was imperative to save downtown. Lufkin became a part of the Main Street organization in 1983 and since that time has become the longest standing Main Street city in Texas.

Main Street Lufkin is a community development organization and works to improve economic management and strengthen public participation by making downtown a fun place to live, work, shop and play. Main Street Lufkin produces several annual events throughout the year which attract thousands, among these are the Annual Downtown Hoedown Festival, Downtown Halloween Trick or Treat and the festive Main Street Lufkin Lighted Christmas Parade.

New programs and events have brought old and new friends to downtown again!

For more information contact Barbara Thompson, Main Street director at 936-633-0205.

The Main Street Four Point Approach is a comprehensive process which initiates positive steps to revitalize and maintain a healthy downtown business district through:

1: Organization: Build an effective volunteer-driven management organization guided by professional staff with broad-based public and private support. Activities may include community visioning, work plan, development, volunteer recruitment and fundraising.

2: Economic Restructuring: Identify your district’s unique economic niche. Activities may include market analysis, business retention and recruitment, business education, parking and transportation improvements, building rehabilitation and new development.

3: Promotion: Create a unified, quality image and development of promotional strategies that capitalize on your district’s unique assets. Activities may include retail advertising, community events, image campaigns, and heritage tours and exhibits.

4: Design; Enhance district’s design appearance. Activities may include cleaning and maintenance, design guidelines, façade improvements, safety programs, historic preservation, streetscape improvements, signage and window displays.

If you are interested in serving on one or more of these committees please contact the Main Street office at 936-633-0205.
