About Main Street Lufkin
the late 1970s, Lufkin, like many of our small Texas
downtowns, was in a serious state of decline. The
automobile, suburban housing and the growth of local and
regional shopping centers greatly reduced the traditional
role of downtowns as the principal center of economic
In the early 1980ís Lufkin community leaders felt it was
imperative to save downtown. Lufkin became a part of the
Main Street organization in 1983 and since that time has
become the longest standing Main Street city in Texas.
Main Street Lufkin is a 501 (C3)non-profit
community development organization and works to improve
economic management and strengthen public participation by
making downtown a fun place to live, work, shop and play.
Main Street Lufkin produces several annual events throughout
the year which attract thousands, among these are the Annual
Downtown Hoedown Festival, Downtown Halloween Trick or Treat
and the festive Main Street Lufkin Lighted Christmas Parade.

The Main Street Four Point Approach is a
comprehensive process which initiates positive steps to
revitalize and maintain a healthy downtown business district
1: Organization: Build an effective
volunteer-driven management organization guided by
professional staff with broad-based public and private
support. Activities may include community visioning, work
plan, development, volunteer recruitment and fundraising.
2: Economic Restructuring: Identify your
districtís unique economic niche. Activities may include
market analysis, business retention and recruitment,
business education, parking and transportation improvements,
building rehabilitation and new development.
3: Promotion: Create a unified, quality image
and development of promotional strategies that capitalize on
your districtís unique assets. Activities may include retail
advertising, community events, image campaigns, and heritage
tours and exhibits.
4: Design; Enhance districtís design
appearance. Activities may include cleaning and maintenance,
design guidelines, faÁade improvements, safety programs,
historic preservation, streetscape improvements, signage and
