Zoo Sends Huachipa Zoo Veterianarian to AZA Croc School
May 22, 2015- Meet Gianmarco Rojas, Veterinarian at Huachipa Zoo in Lima, Peru, and this year’s recipient of Zoo Conservation Outreach Group's (ZCOG) Ellen Trout Zoo Crocodilian Conservation Scholarship. Thanks to financial support provided by ZCOG and the Ellen Trout Zoo, Gianmarco will attend the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ (AZA) Crocodilian Biology and Captive Management professional training course, which takes place from May 29th - June 5th at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park in St. Augustine, Florida.
Gianmarco Rojas has dedicated the last ten years to the study and conservation of crocodilian species in his native country, and organizes the conservation and care of four species of crocodiles at the Parque Zoológico Huachipa--two of which are critically endangered in Peru (Crocodylus acutus and Melanosuchus niger). Dr. Rojas anticipates that his participation in AZA's 'Croc school' will help expand his professional knowledge and lead to improved quality of care at his institution, with the ultimate goal of improving the conservation status of Peru’s crocodiles.
Since 2008, the ZCOG-Ellen Trout Zoo partnership has sent eight Latin American zoo professionals, representing six institutions in five different countries, to train with AZA experts and learn about the latest advances in crocodilian management and conservation.
