DECEMBER 2023 BOARD APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Here is the detailed information on the open positions for December 2023:


Civil Service Commission

One (1) position

Established in 1960 and consists of three (3) members.  This Board hears, discusses and makes decisions regarding issues with the City of Lufkin’s Public Safety Departments, Lufkin Police and Fire.  This Board meets as needed.

A person appointed to the commission must: (1) be of good moral character; (2) be a United States citizen; (3) be a resident of the municipality who has resided in the municipality for more than three years; (4) be over 25 years of age; and (5) not have held a public office within the preceding three years.


Construction Board of Adjustments & Appeals

 Three (3) positions:
  • Residential Contractor
  • Plumbing Contractor
  • Member of the General Public

Created by Ordinance No. 3797, the purpose of this Board is to hear, discuss and make recommendations to City Council regarding appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the Building Official relative to the application and interpretation of the City’s building codes and ordinances.  This Board only meets when necessary.

The Board members are appointed by the City Council and must consist of members who are qualified by experience and training to pass on matters pertaining to building construction and are not employees of the City. The Board must be composed of one licensed architect, one licensed engineer, one licensed plumber, one licensed heating and air conditioning mechanic, one licensed electrician, one residential contractor, one commercial contractor, one commercial property developer and one member at large from the public.

4B/ Economic Development Board

Three (3) positions
The 4B Economic Development Corporation was established as a non-profit entity pursuant to Chapter 501 of the Texas Local Government Code for the purpose of approving and funding economic development projects authorized under State law. The corporation and the 4B Board were established on May 4, 2004. All of the powers of the corporation are vested in a board of directors that are appointed by City Council.  The Board meets on an as needed basis.

 The Board consists of seven (7) members that are appointed for two (2) year terms and each member must be a resident of the City of Lufkin.  Members should be well versed in finance and business decision making.


Parks & Recreation Advisory Board

Two (2) positions

Parks and Recreation is a Department of the City and its board is advisory in nature and its members are appointed by the City Council for three (3) year terms. The Board was created by Resolution No. 3272 and consists of seven (7) members.  The board’s duties include making recommendations to City Council regarding parks planning, policies and development as well as assist with coordinating with other agencies, organizations and individuals regarding parks matters. The boards meets quarterly.

Board members must be residents of the City.

Planning & Zoning Commission

Two (2) positions available

Ordinance No.1026 established the Planning and Zoning Commission. Duties include (but are not limited to) reviewing zoning regulations, applications for zone changes and Special Use Permits, adoption of plats and subdivisions and aid and assist in the development of plans for expansion, improvement and the like. The members of the Commission are appointed by the City Council for a term of three (3) years. Pursuant to Section 33.08 of the Code, the Commission enacted By-Laws and Governing Rules in 1989. The Board meets on an as needed basis.

The members of the Commission must be resident citizens of the corporate limits of the City, owners of real estate in the City, and taxpayers and qualified voters of the City.

 

Zoning Board of Adjustment & Appeals

Four (4) positions available

Established in 1965, this Board exercises quasi-judicial powers and hears and decides appeals where it is alleged that there is error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by and administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning ordinance.  The Board consists of nine (9) members; five (5) sitting members and four (4) alternates.  The Board meets as needed to hear and recommend decisions regarding appeals to rulings regarding Zoning issues.

The members and alternates must be residents of the City, property owners and qualified voters in the City of Lufkin.
